Tim Bowman and Stokley soothe us with “All I Need Is Love”
September 18, 2017 — Usually, I hate Monday mornings: Up too early, back to the gym, back to the office, back to the grind. But lately I have started listening to Spotify’s New Release Radar on such mornings, and today it actually lifted my spirits. The reason? The delightful new track “All I Need Is Love” by the supremely gifted guitarist, Tim Bowman.
Bowman, who hails from Detroit, began playing guitar at age 11 and eventually landed a regular gig as the guitarist for the Winans in the early 1980s. He started his solo recording career in 1996 and has released six albums, the most recent of which, Into The Blue, includes our featured track. His music is perhaps best described as joyous, soulful smooth jazz.
Bowman is a guitarist’s guitarist: His touch, tone, phrasing, dexterity, and inventiveness on both electric and acoustic guitar place him in a league with few other contemporaries. But what I most appreciate about Tim’s playing is his “feel,” the way he pours himself into the song and never plays a wasted note. I hear a lot of late Wes Montgomery in his style; and I imagine that Wes is looking down, smiling, as he listens to this new release.
Our featured track includes Stokley of Mint Condition on lead vocals and is old school R&B of the very best kind: melodic, hypnotic, and in the pocket. Enjoy.
